this was posted in the main forum awhile back but was lost when the board moved to a new server. i had found a forgotten favorite tool that i wanted an excuse to use again. when i came up with this idea i was very pleased with myself. then i read don danenberg's new books on wood boat restoration and here he had been doing this for years on the wood boats he restores. don's books are "how to restore your wooden runabout, vol 1&2". he also writes a column for classic boat. so, i guess i will give the credit to him for this idea.

the beugler striping tool and interlux boot stripe paint were used to paint the caulking stripes

with the old hardware removed, this is what the deck looked like to begin with.

after sanding and buffing it looked like this. wash the deck and wipe it down with alcohol and then with the thinner for the paint. pay special attention to making sure you get all the residue from the buffing out of the stripes.

after all the work the fun part began. the paint was rolled into the stripes with the striping tool. no masking tape was used but i did keep a rag and thinner handy for any slipups.

painting completed before installing the hardware

the completed job with the nos nautaloy hardware installed. no masking tape was used and the deck was completed in an afternoon. the actual painting took about an hour. painting those lines definately added to the appearance of the boat. hope this give you some ideas too.
