I'm new to this forum. After viewing a boat listed near my home this past Sunday, I began researching Elgin branded boats. I managed to convince the owner to hold it for me for two days while I move some stuff out of my garage and gathered a few dollars to get a tongue and ball for my aging Chevy S-10. (Another restore project I've got planned!)
I don't have any pictures yet, but let me describe the find I just brought home. Then after I post this discription I need to head on over to the open forum, because I've a ton of questions on what I should do.
What I stumbled up is a "matching" set. My Sear/Elgin 15' fiberglass modle #63150 also came with an Elgin trailer and an Elgin 45hp outboard motor. What I know about this "set" so far is that the from what little paperwork I recieved from the previous owner. The trailer title states it's a 1963. The previous owner couldn't find the title for the boat, but gave me a "restistration" card for it. I have yet to examine this, to know what year the boat is from. Nor do I know much about the motor. Although the previous owner did say that her husband had it rebuilt approximatly 9 years ago and at that time there was only 1 person in our area that worked on old engines. I was also warned that in it's current state the engine will start in any gear. But most importantly, the motor hasn't been turned over in 9 years!
All I can say at this moment, this will be a long term restore project if I elect to do so. As of right now, I'm unemployed, behind on alot of bills due to not working and taking care of an elderly parent with cancer. (Couldn't find any assistance taking my mother to and from hospital). To make matters worse, since I couldn't get assistance when I needed it, I was put behind on my childsupport obligations! To the point I have had my driver's license suspended. (Yes, I hauled a boat home with a suspended license, no plates on trailer and the wiring on trailer is shot...I was VERY nervious!) What was I doing getting a boat under these conditions... I found the boat listed on Freecycle.com. I didn't have to pay a dime for it, and it was only 9 blocks from my home. Other wise I'd not conicder risking hauling it home.
Well, that's about it for now. As I said in the beginning of my post, I have alot of questions and will start a thread in the general discussion forum. As soon as I can I'll take a picture and post that as well as a reply for this thread.
