Penn Yan
Hello, My name is Andrew from Ithaca NY (Cayuga Lake) and I just purchased an old wooden boat for which I have little information on. I know its late 50's or early sixties, and has the line of Nautalloy's Aquabird hardware (steering wheel/horn) on it. I was told it was a knock off of a Penn Yan. Its 15 ft in length and its in relatively good condition for how old it is, and I believe the outbaord engine is the original. So this year i'm giving it a workman style paint job on the hull and then refinishing the wood in the boat. I'd like to get as much information on this boat as I can but Google apparently isn't sufficient enough for job. Also, I'm searching for info on the Nautalloy hardware. I've been told its pretty rare. Here are some pics. My hope is someone out there will recognize this style of boat and give me some info! Thanks in advance.

I found a boat close to mine. A lapstrake runabout made by Angler.

Here is my boat.

Welcome to the Classic Boathouse, Andy!

I don't know what boat you have there but I do know I like it! Looks like your paint job is turning out great. Transom cleaned up real nice - almost looks new. Good thing you didn't have to replace it - a real challenge with a lapstrake boat.

Have you checked out our old Nautalloy ad? I think I might have some of that hardware in a box some place.

Angler Boat Company of Penn Yan, NY was an affiliated company to Penn Yan Boat Company. Angler made the boats for the big box retailers such as Montgomery Wards. They made boats for Firestone (yup - the tire follks).

Joseph W. Collier died on 28 June 1953 at age 62 at Penn Yan. He was vice president of Angler Boat Co. He joined Penn Yan Boat Co. in 1946 and became VP at Angler in 1951.

There were dozens if not hundreds of builders of lapstrake outboard boats. Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. of Peshtigo, WI was the biggest. They had a branch operation at Cortland, NY which became an independent firm in January 1959; Thompson Boat Company of New York, Inc. Some other lapstrake builders were: Lyman, White, Old Town, Cruisers, Inc., Grady-White, Dunphy, Chetek, Carver (after about 1962), Barbour, Commodore, and many, many others.

there was 30 some or more builders in the fingerlake region..for the best information i would hit the glen's wooden boat show. or the one on the south end of keyuka..

as for excatly who built your boat is VERY diffacult to desipher. since many builders in the region used the lap-strake/pennyan style.. i should know i lived in the area for 25+ years...
